BIOTECH WEBSITE DESIGN & MESSAGING
Crafting a narrative from hard science
Vaxalto Biotherapeutics is a biotechnology company developing a therapy to help patients defeat cancer. The Vaxalto team spent decades researching viral immunotherapies, but hadn’t shared their findings much outside of the scientific community. Without the benefit of a marketing team, they needed to bring on an external partner to help them create a stunning website and advance their brand.

Sometimes, the hardest thing to do is explain something simply. We dug deep into Vaxalto’s science to help express it in a way that resonates with both scientists and investors.
Vaxalto’s site had to speak to two very different audiences, plus differentiate them from similar therapies. We dug into the details of the science to make bold recommendations about the messaging and design priorities that would set them apart.
First, ace their technology.
For Vaxalto, expressing their technology’s strongest differentiators was crucial to creating a compelling brand narrative. We held multiple in-depth interviews with stakeholders to comprehend their vaccine platform and explain their science at various levels of complexity. Our content team determined the right level of detail per page–using headlines to highlight key messages, breaking up large bodies of text to enhance readability, and working to reduce redundancy across the site. Our writers and designers also collaborated to illustrate complex ideas with detailed illustrations and diagrams. All tactics prioritized simplicity and clear information hierarchy.
Go bold with new brand elements.
Designing the Vaxalto site was an in-depth exercise in branding. Without any design elements confirmed, our team worked from scratch to identify an electric color palette, bold font families, and distinct photography and iconography styles to visually express the Vaxalto brand identity. Each element not only had to contribute to the larger narrative, but also work cohesively across the site to create a brand that was at once eye-catching, memorable, and professional. This included abstract background graphics of tumors breaking apart, alongside precise scientific illustrations that were accurate without losing impact among a broader audience.
