Prolific Calvin E. Simmons (1950-1982) was the first Black conductor of a major symphony orchestra. 🎻 He conducted the San Francisco Boys Chorus, Oakland Symphony Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Metropolitan Opera, and San Francisco Opera—all by age 32.

Born and raised in San Francisco, his short but brilliant career paved the way for more Black classical musicians to become leaders in their field.

Eloise Westbrook (1915-2011) was a passionate housing rights activist in Bayview Hunters Point. 🏠 When the city of San Francisco failed to win federal funding for affordable housing, she led a delegation to Washington herself—and didn’t leave until securing over $30 million in grants.

Her legacy as a formidable #civilrights advocate is memorialized in the Westbrook Plaza Health Center and Housing Complex in San Francisco.

Fletcher Joseph Perry (1927-2011) was the first Black player on the 49ers. He set multiple records for speed, earning him the nickname “The Jet,” ✈️ and his 68 rushing touchdowns remain a franchise record!

Perry’s legacy is celebrated in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, along with his three other teammates who made up the historic “Million Dollar Backfield.” 🏈

🗞️ Unstoppable Delilah Beasley (1867-1934) was the first Black woman to be regularly published in a major newspaper. #oaklandtribune Also a self-trained historian, she spent 8 years traveling across California for research.
